Is anybody out there a dj? Are there any tips you would give to beginners?

I’m planning next year to get a set of turntables and start praticing to become a dj. I’ll be spinning house, club music, and other genres. Any recommendations or pointers to becoming a good dj?

Yep i have been a dj for years and am resident at a good spot in Bangkok. Also play other clubs too.I play from funky to hard house. If you get Turntables get a set of 12’s (Technics) or now lots of the dj’s i have met use CDJ’s (pioneer) which is what i now use.To be honest i prefer them and would think it’s even better to get them as vinyl is so expensive these days. You can get the Pioneer 800’s or 1000’s which are good enough.Dj’s i have met here using these are Slipmatt,Little Louie Vega (masters at work),Paul Oakenfold,Laurent Garnier and Judge Jules. You can get alot more tunes for your money than vinyl. To start dj-ing you first have to learn to beat match. You probably know the whole idea is getting the beats the right speed and mixing the tunes on the right beat so when you cross from one track to the other it sounds like one continious track.First you need to learn to mix(match the beats) before you can getting your own style of mixing. It takes time.Start with simple tracks where the beats just go on and on and don’t have too many pauses so you can get used to mixing beats. Also get a good Mixer.Pioneer,Vestax,Technics or Allen and Heath and try to get one where you have the kill switches.kill switches cut out certain sounds and are good to play about with. You can either cut out the bass, mid range or top end (highs) so when you get good you can mix the bass from one track to another etc.Like i say start with beat matching then take it from there!

practice, practice, practice…… i cant stress that enough, you have to really work on your craft because if your not good at it then people wont you to DJ at there party. practice on scratching, mixing songs together, and beat matching.

when i first started i practice like 3hrs a day for like 6 months straight. whatever you do, don’t get discourage. As a DJ, I’m always learning new things, there will always be somthing to learn.

I tought my self how to scratch, i would always listen to cds that had music with djs scratching on them or watched video clips of djs scratching. when you get a chance go to youtube, type in the serach area "do it yourself" look untill you see some djs scratching, also look for dj q bert, he is insane.
if you ever need advice on where to get all the latest songs out there, or if you have and questions,
