How to Cultivate Your Kids Musical Talents?
How old does my child have to be before he takes kids music lessons? How can I cultivate musical talent in my child? These are just some of the questions that I often receive, and which I am addressing in this article. In reality, each one of us, male or female, old or young, differs in the way we learn music. Some take up one kind of musical instrument only to eventually settle for another kind. Every musician you come into contact with will have their own experience, and will have something to share with everyone.
There are, however, many ways that we can direct a child’s interest to help their musical talent manifest itself and grow more naturally from an early age. The first thing you want to do is familiarize a child with music, and you can start by singing that cradle song to them. It is truly remarkable how music can calm an agitated baby. They love to hear your voice, and they love repetitive chime like songs. Sing to them before they sleep, or during those times that they are restless.
To more firmly develop their interest in music, you should really get your children to learn a musical instrument. Choose educational toys for them that play happy or soothing music. When kids enjoy doing something, they do not mind repeating it again and again, hour after hour, day after day. So when they fall in love with a song, expect to hear it over and over again. Young children are noted to be more intrigued with classical music. They gravitate towards the woodwind and string instruments.
Sing along with them, even if singing is not really your talent. Kids don’t normally care if you sing off key or not. Examples of songs to start with are Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, Wheels on the Bus, and others. Any song for children or even folk songs will do. This will engage their attention and develop their love of music.
Ok so let’s say your child is growing up with music toys and songs, but what age do you start a formal kids music education for him? This can be determined by the depth of his interest in music. I would say that children that are introspective learn language easily, are more likely to enjoy music.
While children that are sports oriented are least likely to understand the intricacies of music. A good time to start kids music classes is usually when the child is about 5 or 6 and underStands the basics of reading. When your child begins to be able to distinguish between musical symbols, then he is deemed old enough to start some music lessons. But that is not to say, children cannot start musical education at a later age and not become good at it. This really depends on the individual child.
Once in some type of musical education, you need to promote the child’s interest. You can accomplish this by taking an active part in your child’s learning experience. Go to class with him. Give him recognition when he masters a new chord or set of notes. Watch him perform during recitals. You have to become your child’s number one fan. This should motivate him to continue developing his musical talents and abilities.
